Transforming communities through targeted programs and sustainable initiatives that empower women and improve lives across Ilorin.
High-impact programs driving positive change in our community
In response to the growing concern of drug abuse among youths in Ilorin, IWA's Guidance & Counselling Committee launched a comprehensive awareness campaign titled "The Scourge of Drug Abuse: Protecting Our Future." This initiative aimed to educate young people about the dangers of substance abuse and promote healthy, drug-free lifestyles.
The campaign featured interactive workshops, school outreach programs, and community dialogues that reached over 2,000 students across secondary schools in Ilorin. We emphasized the importance of making positive life choices and provided resources for those struggling with addiction or peer pressure.
A key highlight was our collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kwara State Command, which provided expert facilitators and educational materials. Together, we distributed informational pamphlets, organized counseling sessions, and established a support hotline for youths seeking help.
Ilorin Women Association proudly celebrated World Hijab Day 26 under the theme "#UnityInHijab". This global event recognizes millions of Muslim women who choose to wear the hijab and live a life of modesty.
Our celebration brought together women from diverse backgrounds to foster understanding, respect, and unity. The event featured educational sessions about the significance of the hijab in Islam, cultural presentations, and solidarity activities where non-Muslim women were invited to experience wearing the hijab for a day.
The initiative promoted interfaith dialogue, challenged stereotypes, and celebrated religious diversity while empowering Muslim women to take pride in their identity and faith practices. Over 500 women participated in the day's activities, creating bonds of sisterhood across different communities.
This annual celebration has become a cornerstone of our cultural and religious tolerance programs, promoting mutual respect and understanding in our increasingly diverse society.
Recognizing the importance of preparing youth for the future, IWA organized an inter-school debate competition focused on a cutting-edge topic: "The Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the Nigerian Secondary School Curriculum is the Best Way to Achieve Educational Goals."
The competition brought together students from 10 selected schools across Ilorin South, Ilorin East, Moro, Ilorin West, and Asa local government areas. Each team presented compelling arguments for and against AI integration in education, demonstrating critical thinking, research skills, and public speaking abilities.
Held at the IEDPU Hall, Garin Alimi, the event attracted educators, policymakers, and technology enthusiasts. The debate sparked important conversations about educational reform, digital literacy, and preparing Nigerian students for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Winners received educational grants, technology gadgets, and mentorship opportunities. This initiative not only developed students' analytical skills but also positioned IWA as a forward-thinking organization committed to educational innovation.
IWA held its prestigious Annual General Meeting under the theme "Unity, Heritage, and Progress: Strengthening the Pillars of Ilorin Women." This significant gathering at the Emir's Palace (Kaa Esin) brought together members to reflect on achievements, plan for the future, and celebrate our collective heritage.
The event featured keynote addresses from prominent women leaders, cultural performances showcasing Ilorin's rich heritage, and strategic planning sessions for upcoming initiatives. Dr. Limota Goroso-Giwa delivered an inspiring speech emphasizing the importance of unity among Ilorin women in driving community development.
Members reviewed the association's accomplishments over the past year, including successful completion of 12 community projects, empowerment of 350 women through skills acquisition programs, and educational support for 200 indigent students.
The meeting also served as a platform for launching new initiatives, recognizing outstanding members, and strengthening the bonds of sisterhood that form the foundation of our association's strength and impact.
In our commitment to environmental sustainability and community health, IWA organized a comprehensive cleanup exercise at Oloje Market, one of Ilorin's busiest commercial centers. This initiative was part of our broader environmental advocacy program aimed at promoting cleanliness and proper waste management practices in public spaces.
The cleanup exercise involved over 100 IWA members and volunteers who worked tirelessly to clear drainage systems, remove accumulated waste, and educate market traders on the importance of maintaining a clean environment. The project also included distribution of waste bins and educational materials on proper waste disposal.
This initiative not only improved the sanitary conditions of the market but also raised awareness about environmental health among traders and shoppers, contributing to a healthier community for all. The success of this project has inspired similar initiatives in other markets across Ilorin.
